Goshawks / Azores

- Leonardo & Raquel -

While in England, we were invited to go 

hunting by Leon Mulholland with his son,

Jak. The birds were two Goshawks,

a chamber raised female (Jak's), and an

imprint (Leon's), also a female. To flush

the rabbits they brough along a ferret as

well.

It was our first time watching Goshawks

being flown and hunted and the experience

was brilliant. We enjoyed ourselves quite

a bit and damn! are Goshawks quick off the 

glove...

Durante nuestra estancia en Inglaterra, 

fuimos invitados por parte de Leon Mullholland

y su hijo, Jak, a acompañarlos a una cacería.

Las aves en esta ocasión fueron dos Azores,

una hembra de cría natural y otra, hembra

también, improntada. 

Para sacar la presa, llevaron un hurón.

Era la primera vez que veiamos volar y cazar

Azores, así como tambien la primera vez que

veiamos trabajar a un hurón.

La experiencia fue increíble y ¡vaya! qué

rápido son los Azores saliendo del guante...

Rabbit burroughs / Las Madrigueras de Conejo

The hunting grounds / Los terrenos de cacería

After flushing a few rabbits and a few close

 flights, the first rabbit was caught.

 /

 Después de algunos vuelos cercanos 

a agarrar presa, el primer conejo fue capturado. 

This last rabbit of the season for Jak

was caught in mid-air after trying to jump

over the water. It was an amazing flight 

to say the least and both Goshawk and the 

rabbit landed on the water. 

 /

 Éste conejo el último de de la temporada 

para Jak, fué capturado en el aire tratando de 

brincar el agua. Fue un vuelo increíble por 

decir poco, y tanto el halcón como 

el conejo aterrizaron en el agua.

A very long and very close flight. / Un vuelo muy

     largo y cercano a agarrar.

 This rabbit headed for the brush but didn't escape...

/

Éste conejo se dirgía a esconderse en el matorral,

pero no logró escapar...

Control Biológico

 

Durante los meses de Septiembre, Octubre y Noviembre del 2013, 

realizamos por parte de nuestro despacho de DECOLORVERDE, 

el trabajo de control biológico de plagas en unos cultivos de mora azul.

Abarcamos una superficie aproximada de 200 hectáreas repartidas en 

distintos terrenos. Como dato curioso, en la zona del Sur de Jalisco se 

conoce a la mora azul como arándano.

El control biológico lo realizamos Leonardo, Alberto y Raquel, 

trabajando en equipo con nuestras aguilillas, dos Aguilillas de Harris, 

Parabuteo unicinctus, 'El Rey Herodes' y 'La Chiqui', y un Cola Roja, 

Buteo jamaicensis, 'Lance'.

During the months of Semptember, October and November of 2013, 

we worked on behalf of our workshop, DECOLOVERDE, in biological

pest control. The work was done in approximately 200 hectares of 

blueberry fields, spread out in different terrains.

We, Leonardo, Alberto and Raquel, did the work with our two Harris

Hawks, Parabuteo unicinctus, 'El Rey Herodes' y 'La Chiqui' and a 

Red Tailed Hawk, Buteo jamaicensis, 'Lance'.

Cazamos unas cuantas ardillas de diferentes especies ,

también estas dañan los cultivos comiéndose las raíces de las

plantas por medio de sus madrigueras.

We hunted a few squirrels of different species wich also damage

the crops by eating the roots of the plants within their burrows.

Varias especies de pájaros estaban afectando los cultivos, entre ellos

la especie mayormente responsable de comerse y dañar las moras era 

el Pinzón Mexicano, Carpodacus mexicanus.

Al finalizar el trabajo, conseguimos expulsar de la zona de cultivos,

un 99% de las aves plaga.

Different birds species were affecting the crops, among them the main

species responsable for eating and damaging the berries was The Mexican House

Finch, Carpodacus mexicanus.

By the time the job was over, we managed to drive out 99% of the pest birds 

from the site.

Encontramos un espécimen de Crotalus basiliscus, serpiente de cascabel,

en los cultivos. Lamentablemente no alcanzamos a llegar a tiempo

para re-ubicarla a otra zona, los trabajadores

ya la habían matado. Durante estos 3 meses de trabajo en 

el campo, también tratamos de informar a los trabajadores

sobre la diversa fauna de la zona y de la importancia que

tienen en el ecosistema, para fomentar su protección y 

evitar que por falta de conocimiento las ataquen.

We found a specimen of Crotalus basiliscus, mexican rattlesnake in the fields,

unfortunately we weren't able to save it and relocate it before the

workers got to it and killed it. During these 3 months, part of our job was to

try and inform the workers of the importance of wildlife that can be found

in the area and why it is important for the ecosystem. This in order to 

increase awareness and protection of local wildlife.
